Our Lady of the Gate Parish Church

A 17th Baroque church stand on a hill with commanding view of Mayon Volcano, and now one of the province and country’s historical treasure recognized by the Bishops Conference of the Philippines.

About the church: The Our Lady of the Gate Parish Church contains archeological relics of saints and rare religious seals engraved on volcanic rocks throughout its entire façade including the belfry. It is also said that the relics were all that was left after the bombing of American planes during the World War II in 1945.

History: According to the tale Daraga church was built by young maidens or Daraga. But in history it was built in 1773 by Franciscan missionaries at the time when Daraga was just a part of Cagasawa. The Architecture of Daraga was said to be Baroque but many say’s it’s a mixture of Mexican baroque and renaissance gothic. The church’s facade also carries the coat of arms of the Franciscan Order, images of Franciscan saints, and of course, an image of Our Lady of the Gate.

So we Bicolano’s should be proud that we have this great landmark that will surely mark in the history of Bicol Region in the next –next generation.
